Swami Vivekananda Quote

When I asked God for Strength
He gave me difficult situations to Face

When I asked God for Brain and Brow
He gave me difficult puzzles to Solve

When I asked God for Happiness
He showed me Unhappy People

When I asked God for Wealth
He showed me how to work Hard

When I asked God for Favours
He showed me opportunities to work Hard

When I asked God for Peace
He showed me how to Help Others

God gave me nothing I wanted
He showed me how to get what I need.

Quote by Swami Vivekananda.

This just makes me feel--- Prabhu ki Leela nayari... the divine always has its own plan and no matter what one should always be the doer irrespective of the situation. God is within onself and we eternally guide ourselves too --- just like the higher self talking :)

Angel of Mercy- Mother Teresa

Agnes- we thank u
" By blood I am Albanian.By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, a catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."
                     Mother Teresa (1910-1997)

As human beings how many times have we felt abandoned by God, felt that is his mystery is just a fantasy and nothing more than that, how many times have we felt that our belief and feelings no longer within us, how many times have we thought to give up the world of temptations of belief and done something of our true calling !!!  A young woman Agnes Gonreha Bojaxhiu in South Yugoslavia did something of her true calling.

From the quiet contemplative life of Agnes ( Mother Teresa) revealed her humanitarian deeds. Her loneliness, heartbreak and desolation with the Almighty began upon seeing poorest of the poor people in India. She took others pain as her own, feelings of abandonment and doubt of others as her own. Every kind deed of hers speaks millions about Mother Teresa , the gift to humankind.

Great life of Mother Teresa, Saint with a true heart :-

  • At age 12 decided to become a nun to dedicate her life to God's work & by age 18 she became a nun in the congregation of sisters at Ireland.
  • By 1942 Mother Teresa took a vow to give herself entirely to Christ, to give God anything her asks her for any deed.
  • In 1946 while a train journey in Calcutta did realize her true calling-- " Calling to serve the poor and needy". It is interesting to note she got visions of Jesus asking her to work on the mission for charity.
  • Mother Teresa learnt Bengali and worked for the welfare of others
  • Missionary of Charity was started in 1946 ( formally in 1950) which serves to the poor and needy till date & cares for leprosy patients. Initially there was no money she took a bunch of poor children and started teaching them , later donations came like chair , table etc.
  • Nirmal Hriday (home of pure heart) was the name replaced for the Kalighat home for dying. Those who were brought here were taken care of and died with dignity as per there Mazhab ( religion)
  • Nirmala shishu bhavan a place of lost children and their care
  • Shanti Nagar/Prem Nivas a place to treat leprosy patients, well being  food, bandages and mobile kind of clinics.
  • Her presence and works are known throughout the world, her missionaries are open in Venezuela,  Austria, UK and other countries.
  • Mother Teresa received Padma Shri, Jawaharlal Nehru international award, Bharat Ratna, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Nobel Peace Prize and others
Some of Mother Teresa's feelings-

Despite the great deeds and helping the poor it provided her with Inner Joy. With all the suffering she saw she felt lonely, abandonment from God, had feelings the heaven is empty, that God maybe doesnt exist and she was nothing at all. To this extend was Mother Teresa internally hurt by seeing others pain.
Her words itself mark her as one the greatest saints of our times, her thoughts that her work was just her duty and had no emotional, physical , spiritual connect or greatness. In her heart she kept the vow with the lord to serve others and put them forward before her self.
She converted her feeling of abandonment to ABSOLUTE.

Learning from Mother Teresa,  the great teacher:-
Mother Teresa feeding a child
with love and compassion
  • Be Humble
  • " The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for  is the greatest poverty. we must start in our own homes to remedy this poverty"
  • To follow your true inner calling or to follow your heart
  • Commitment to the work you do
  • Love people around us, especially family
  • Dedication and will supercede every hardship
  • Vow to self and not be moved by what think or do.
  • Humane Compassion and unconditional love exist
  • No discrimination and tolerance and acceptance of every human being
  • Every one has the right to live and die with dignity
  • Actions speak louder than words
  • Sometimes we learn from our sufferings.
  • Have Faith, believe in faith. :)

" There is terrible hunger for love. We experience in our lives - pain, loneliness. We must have the courage to recognize it. The poor you may have right in your own family. Find them, love them."
                                                                                                                              Mother Teresa

Baba Amte

" First you have to take the spear in your heart, then can you take the crown on your head "                                                                                                    - Baba Amte (1914-2008)

A Lawyer, a freedom fighter, a  social activist, messiah of the poor/downtrodden classes , a man of few words but great action- this is Baba Amte; the crusader of the prevailing injustice in the society. I first read about Baba Amte when i was in 3rd grade/standard. He has always been one the great humanitarians who have been my inspiration in some way or the other.

Greatness of Baba Amte, a true social reformer :-
  • Successful Lawyer and awarded with prestigious awards -Padmashree, Padma Vibhushan,  Magsaysay Award, Damein Dutton Award ( specific for leprosy), International Gandhi Peace Prize, UN Human Rights  and others
  • Left his lucrative law profession to work for and with the rag pickers and sweepers
  • Worked as defence lawyer for the freedom fighters of " Quit India Movement"
  • Baba ( when only 35 years old) after pursuing a leprosy related course opened clinics for leprosy patients .His work for leprosy patients and their health services to cure the deadly disease  is unmatched and speaks of his greatness.
  • Bharat Jodoo Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari was the mission to promote integrity and oneness of the nation
  • Narmada Bachao Andolan which was spearheaded by Baba was fight for the injustice to the locals during the building of Darovar Dam.
  • Baba was the first one to initiate communication and care for the Madia Gond Tribal people. His contribution in opening hospitals with free service, school is commendable. The Lok Briadari Prakalp Dwakhana ( LBP Hospital) serves 40,000 or more tribals within a radius of 1000 km.
  • He worked for the betterment and improving the relationship between India- Pakistan for Peace Missions
  • Rescue centres for animals or animal orphanages.
  • Baba's work and compassion towards the Dalits and improvising their situation and acceptance in the Indian society.
  • Baba built the Anandwan for the welfare of people- hospital, school, blind and deaf school and many more. His son and his wife have been quite instrumental in taking his works to next level and promoting welfare and selfless acts for humanity.
  • Gokul ( home for leprosy patients and orphans), Uttarayan ( free home for senior citizens), Sneh Savali ( treatment for leprosy), Sukh sadan, ASHA Yuvagram ( for dropouts who wish to pursue education again) are a few of the initiatives I am aware of by Baba from 1928- 1983.

Learnings from Baba Amte, a true teacher :-
  • To be humble
  • To be compassionate and tolerate
  • To treat everyone human being equally- irrespective of age, caste, social status, religion
  • To give and donate
  • To serve others especially the downtrodden classes /people and not consider it as an act of greatness or ego
  • To perform selfless act.
  • To be oneself and to do what your heart desires
  • To be determined
  • To help the needy so that they can help themselves
We cant be miracle workers like Baba Amte but we can atleast attempt to learn something from his life and inculcate a bit of it in ourselves or our life ---this life, this place, this country , this world would be a better place !

" Anyone can overtake Baba Amte. The only thing I have is my determination "
                                                                                                                 -Baba Amte
